For as far as I can remember, I’ve always been attracted to beautiful materials and linens. The touch of a natural organic cotton or linen, the texture of a luxurious jacquard, the intricate details of a hand-embroidered piece… They are what makes the difference between a simple home product (with, in most cases, a short shelf life) and a family heirloom, passed on through generations.
When I landed my first job in Paris, I rented a tiny flat in the 12th arrondissement. I had to buy everything since I had just moved back to Europe from studying in the US. I remember passing through the beautiful home linens stalls at the Printemps Haussmann department stores to get inspiration for my new abode. My budget was super limited, but I clearly remember stopping by the Yves Delorme booth where a beautiful bedding set sample was showcased, touching the luxurious softness of the fabric and thinking: “Woah, it must be SO nice to sleep in this!”
For the little story, I ended up buying a mass produced duvet cover that fitted my tiny budget, but this feeling of plenitude, of timeless beauty and quality stuck with me over the years… The real luxury. Not the one you see on the price tag… The one you can feel, touch, and appreciate humbly and gratefully, because it was made with care, by some “petites mains” as they call the haute couture seamstresses in the fashion world; expert hands of French “savoir faire” (know how) passed on from generations to generations of textile crafters.
To celebrate Bastille Day, we – and by we, I mean Daisy and I, because she’s a real pro at bedding scenes if you didn’t already know! – were invited to style the glorious PALMES bedding set from the new Yves Delorme summer collection. Its delicate sky blue hues and contrasting foliage patterns inspired me to decorate our bedroom with festive string lights and silk ribbons embracing the French flag colors. We also treated ourselves with a breakfast tray filled with French delicacies and summer berries.
We created little Provence aromatic bouquets from our patio planted pots to add a smell of summer in the air. Inès got the green light to get creative and “graffiti-ed” the wall with a “happiness is in the air” message (transl. “Y’a d’la Joie”, which is also a famous song from French singer Charles Trenet).
Speaking of song and music, I’m sharing a Bastille Day mixtape for you to enjoy at home. It’s an ode to the French culture and its beautiful and rich language, with some brilliantly talented international artists performing iconic French songs; because of all days, today is the day when we are all a little more French at heart and can add a French joie de vivre at home!
