I visited my dear friend Kiana, of Tulipina, a few weeks ago, and I fell in love with her newly remodeled barn in upstate New York.
Kiana, Nate, their three teens, Arasteh, Aram and Navid, and two pets, Charlie and Atticus, moved from San Francisco to upstate New York in August this year, after overseeing the remodeling of their barn for more than 6 months. Kiana, the renowned floral designer behind Tulipina, had a dream of living on the country side and growing her own flowers.
Now that they’ve moved, the family is busy planting, repairing and setting up the outdoors areas, one of which is… a greenhouse! I can’t wait to visit them again to discover the progress!
Kiana and Nate chose wood, iron and mineral materials throughout the space and opened the wall and flow to let the natural light in. Walls were kept mostly white to accentuate antique pieces and Kilim rugs (Kiana’s dad used to be an antique Persian rug dealer, and most of the rugs you’ll see here are either from her dad’s collection, or acquired during our trip to Marrakech together last year!). I love how each space in the house has its own “rug vignette”, like a signature throughout the space.
Kiana’s personal floral touches can be found everywhere, here and there; her paintings on the wall and the antique accent pieces scouted locally add to the unique character and personality of this home.
You’ll also find strong doses of ingenuity and creativity. A yellow front door! What a fabulous idea, isn’t it? From inside or out, it adds such a fun element of pizzazz to the barn!
Did I mention this lovely pond on the property, and its canoe, left by the previous owner?
… And upstate New York in the Fall, as beautiful as ever! Oh, East coast, you know how to rock the Fall look! Thank you for the grand’ show!
