15+ headboard ideas

10.10.2017

We don’t have a headboard in our bedroom, because the bed is currently positioned in front of 2 large windows. I’m currently thinking of moving the bed on another wall, and checking original headboard ideas. These are my current favorites.

A storage headboard that blends with the wall.

A simple plywood construction.

Frames behind the bed; but in San Francisco, where earthquakes are not uncommon, I wouldn’t risk sleeping under a bunch of glass frames.

The best built-in EVER! Love the pile of books in the recess plywood wall.

A black frame, or a painted chalkboard piece of plywood serves as a graphic headboard.

A 2/3 painted wall to define the bed area maybe?

A Boho chic headboard. I love how the white finish complements the vintage textiles.

The bed sits in the middle of the room, thanks to an original stand-alone wooden storage structure, which doubles as a headboard.

Another beautiful stand-alone structure.

I love how the wood is running throughout the wall on this example, and keeps the mood of the room very minimal.

A vintage leather gym mat is used as a headboard. Love this!

This headboard is simply made out of pegboard wood. This is genius, ins’t it!

Which one is your favorite?

I like a few of these, but for others, I think they fail to live up to their original function, which is to give a person lounging in bed something to lean against that will not push the bed away from the wall nor mess up the wall. As far as that goes, the bed should be attached to the headboard. Right? Otherwise it risks pushing out. Perhaps on some of these there exist clever mechanisms for holding the mattress and box springs in place.

    Hi Si,

I love ’em all, but living on San Francisco bedrock as we do, meh…. probably not the first three options. Haha, right!? Those books and goodies are coming down on your head in an earthquake. Yikes ;)

The vintage leather gym mat (well cleaned and aired out, of course) is my personal favorite. It is unique, welcoming, and man style-friendly. I love that cognac colour as well.

I agree with you and other commenters about being fearful of items potentially coming off the wall and onto one’s cranium in the middle of the night.

    Cheers, Ardith

P.S. Those vintage textiles have me swooning.

A lot of manufacturers make new replicas of these old leather gym bags – but I personally prefer the patina of an old one. And yes, living in an earthquake zone greatly influences our design choices… Cheers @Ardith!

The vintage leather gym mat is not vintage at all. It’s by the Danish brand By Thornam. They are so cool!

Thank you for the shopping info, @BlackKBH – I meant that this design was inspired by vintage leather gym bags, but it’s a great option for people who want to buy new/ replica, so thank you for that.
