At home with Kenzo Takada

09.26.2017

I’ve been a long time fan of Kenzo Takada’s work. Back when he was the designer of the brand Kenzo, I acquired a few stoles and scarves that I’ve still cherished to this day. Kenzo Takada left the Kenzo brand – sold to the LVMH luxury group in 1999, and retired.

The iconic fashion designer has abandoned his voluntary retirement to imagine a Japanese-accented collection for the equally iconic Roche Bobois Mah Jong sofa. To dress the Mah Jong modular sofa, Takada took inspiration from ancient kimonos used in the Noh Theatre, re-interpreting their patterns and colours to create fine and sophisticated harmonies symbolising the 3 times of the day: Asa, the morning, uses pastel tones, while Hiru – noon – plays with bright colors and Yoru, night, highlights blues and dark greens.  Here are a few shots of Mr Takada, sketching in his beautiful, light-filled Parisian apartment.
