Visit | A converted milk factory

10.24.2016

Welcome to the home of Mary, Toon and their 3 daughters, Pippi, Maisie and Zwaantje in The Hague. Mary is the editor in chief of interior design magazine Eigen Huis & Interieur.

The family invested 12 years ago in an old milk factory and proceeded to convert it into a family home, one room at a time without the professional help of an architect. Mary and Toon kept a lot of the industrial features intact and added lots of iconic design pieces, making the space a hybrid between the old and the contemporary.

Hi! I’m not sure she still is the editor in chief at Eigen Huis & Interieur. The last couple of numbers featured a new EiC. Sadly so, I might add because it was really good under her reign (the new editor came complete with a new makeover). It is a more luxury designmagazine so if done wrong it becomes about the (expensive) stuff you can buy rather than about the spirit and motives behind choosing (costly) quality for your house. Love the tiles in the kitchen! Have a nice day!

I understand that the owners wanted the house to look as chic as possible for the photoshoot. Unfortunately it reminds me of a shop not a home. Where are the toys and the kids’ posters? Its a beautiful space undoubtedly but not homely.

I love everything here, and it feels very homey to me! @Christie, the children’s toys seem to be stored in the baskets on the background of the very last picture; it looks to me like a whole playroom rooftop level.
Thanks s much for sharing, Si!
