Our family trip to Venice Beach

10.13.2016

We traveled a few days to Southern California this past week to visit some college campuses for Inès, my oldest one. She’s now a junior in high school and is starting to look at universities to apply to, starting next year. We flew to Los Angeles and rented an Airbnb in Venice Beach. The apartment we rented was lovely, super well located and our host, Dara, was beyond welcoming and friendly; we walked around Venice to discover this fantastic area and followed many of Dara’s personal recommendations.

We also visited University of California at Irvine, UCLA which hosted their Fall open house, and drove down to San Diego to visit the UCSD campus.

We all absolutely loved Venice Beach. The vibe, the people, the shops, the beach walk, the food spots, oh and the weather, with a whopping 90 degrees in October!

We also wandered around Abbott Kinney Boulevard, had a delicious brunch at The Butcher’s Daughter – I highly recommend their avocado toast benedict, so yummy! We also played paparazzi in front of the gorgeous street murals Abbott Kinney offers.

We’re planning other visits of California and other states campuses for both girls in the coming year [Maya is just a year behind her sister], so stay tuned!

Do you have kids heading to college soon? Such an exciting and scary time, isn’t it?

It looks so exotic–the beach and the palm trees–and yet SO classically all-American.
Best to send them to school where the weather is nasty and there’s nothing to do but STUDY!

Gorgeous pictures, Si! Your girls seem so happy. It looks like a fantastic family trip. Please send some SoCal sun my way…. :-0

Glad you enjoyed Venice! You did a great job documenting the trip. Next time check out Manhattan Beach. It’s not so city crazy with helicopters at night and mega crime which happens in VB. The sleepier towns south of MB are great too! Hermosa and Redondo Beach. The Beach House Hotel in Hermosa Beach is a great place to stay right on the beach. You can rent bikes right there to cruise the strand. Best of luck on your daughter’s college selection. My son went East to Yale and daughter stayed in So Cal and goes to USC. Her dream school was UCLA but she did not get in.

Inès fell in love with UCLA as well, and she’s determined to get in. But the admission rate is so competitive!
Thank you also for all these precious recommendations, I’ll be sure to check these areas out on our next trip – we still have all the CA state universities to visit. Arhh, this college application process is a real job, ins’t it?
