I’m not a romantic girl. Not per se. I’ve never been into materialistic/ tangible shows of love. When I got married, I didn’t go through the engagement phase – we’re not that big into engagements in France anyway. When my soon-to-be husband wanted to get me a nice diamond ring, I told him to save his money and wait 10 years. By then, we would have raised children together, changed diapers, experienced the best and the worse of happily-ever-after and by then, a rock would mean a whole lot more to me. 10 years later, he sweetly reminded me of our conversation and offered to take me shopping for a nice diamond ring. But even then, with two little ones at home and a life filled with DIY, craft, and gardening projects, I told him I’d rather take a trip with him to celebrate our love. We went to Rome for 3 days without the kids, and to this day, I haven’t missed my diamond ring.
I am romantic, but not in a traditional way. Happiness in a couple means taking the time to celebrate life together often, especially after 18 years of marriage. Sure, I love some flowers or heart-shaped chocolate now and then, but love means a lot more to me. It’s all about bonding, planning quality time together, away from the kids, the craziness of everyday life.
So to celebrate Valentine’s Day this year [and since he happens to be traveling to Europe that day], we agreed to take a day off while the kids were at school and spend a special day together. It turns out that around that exact same time, Getaround asked me to test their app and service.
Getaround is like an Airbnb, but for car rental. You can rent a neighborhood car for a few hours, a day or two [or three, or more] and return it when you’re done. So we rented a convertible car and headed toward one of our favorite spots in the San Francisco bay area, Stinson Beach.
Getaround is as easy to use as you could possibly imagine. With your cell phone, you can see all available cars in your neighborhood, and through a couple of clicks, book the car of your choice. You never need to meet the car owner. The app gives you the exact location of the parked car, and even enables you to unlock and lock the car through one single click on your phone screen.
While the weather was not fully cooperating for a convertible car, San Francisco was as romantic as it could be that day : foggy and moody. We had the most lovely and peaceful time together, and enjoyed some fresh ocean air, had a romantic lunch in a little cafe in Stinson Beach. That day was special. More special than a diamond ring or some flowers to me.
For those of you who may be planning a romantic getaway with your +1, I’m sharing my road trip Spotify list. It’s a mix of road trip classics and love songs, and I hope you’ll enjoy it. Happy Valentine’s Day sweet friends, and may the power of love always be with you. Xo, Si-

PPS: Similarly, as a car owner, you can rent your car with Getaround and earn from $500 to $1500 a month. Pretty sweet, n’est-ce-pas?
