Celebrating fall + a mixtape

09.10.2015

When it comes to decorating my table, I love simplicity. I want my guests to feel right at home, comfortable, happy to gather around a simple, but elegant, table to catch up on things, mingle, and spend a cosy evening together.

Fall for me is the ‘comfort’ season. Days are getting shorter but we’re still occasionally enjoying the warm rays of the sun, the air conditioning is finally turned off and the windows are open during the day to freshen the home; leaves are turning into magical hues of yellows and burnt oranges and [yay to that!] it’s sweater season in the evening: soft, luxurious, and cosy textures to wrap yourself into.

When Pier 1 asked me to dress a table using their Fall and Harvest collection, I was thrilled to tackle this project. So here is my take on a simple, rustic, harvest-inspired table setting. We had some friends over for dinner, and I’m happy to report that my Fall harvest-themed dinner was a huge success.

I chose simple pieces from the Pier 1 collection: natural wood chargers, clean line white plates, sophisticated wine glasses, and for the decorating touches, a glimmer string light garland running throughout the table, and a Fall leaves wreath that highlights the changing colors of the season as a focal point on the wall.

Also, as a French family, we are big cheese lovers, so I fell for the cheese knife set. Their elegant, sleek lines complement my table perfectly.

I also kept the table linen white, using my vintage tablecloth and vintage monogrammed napkins I had acquired in a flea market, to keep a fresh and crisp look. I used some rope and cut outs of the Pier 1 crystal glitter leaf branch as napkin ring decor accents to complete the rustic but festive look of the table. For the dining placement cards, I simply handwrote the name of my guests with a copper color ink pen, and picked the name tag – attached on the back to a skewer wooden pick – on a pear… from the garden again [we have so many pears this year, I am trying to recycle them as much as possible, plus I think it adds an unexpected additional ‘earthy’ element to the table, don’t you think?

For the menu, I chose earthy and classic French dishes: boeuf bourguignon, a French stew made with beef and carrots cooked in red wine, a simple harvest salad, with blue cheese, candied walnuts and pears from the garden, and for dessert, some pears [again, from the garden] with a chocolate coulis. Preparing these simple dishes in advance allowed me to entertain and enjoy my guests’ company all evening, instead of being stuck in the kitchen while everyone was mingling.

Above the table, I ran a string of lights [I just spray painted an old string of lights in a copper metallic finish] and arranged some rustic branch bouquets made of olive tree, craspedia dried flowers and seeded eucalyptus branches.

I also created a music playlist for this evening gathering: a mix of French and American songs, from oldies to more recent tunes. And because many of you liked my previous Spotify mixtape so much, I decided to share this playlist with you again. I hope you like it and get to use it at your next Fall get-together.

Merci Marie! Xo, Si-
